Smoking Ban Scotland Legislation

Scotland Tightens Smoking Restrictions

Outdoor Smoking Ban Takes Effect

The Scottish Parliament has passed legislation banning smoking outside hospitals and other healthcare facilities. The new law, which went into effect on March 31, 2023, prohibits smoking within 15 meters of any entrance or exit to a hospital or other healthcare building. This includes all outdoor areas, such as sidewalks, patios, and parking lots.

The ban is part of a broader effort to reduce smoking rates in Scotland. In 2006, the Scottish Parliament passed the Smoking Health and Social Care Scotland Act, which banned smoking in all indoor public places. The new law extends this ban to outdoor areas around healthcare facilities.

The legislation is in line with growing public support for smoke-free environments. A recent survey found that 80% of Scots support a ban on smoking outside hospitals.

The new law is expected to have a significant impact on smoking rates in Scotland. A study published in the journal "Tobacco Control" found that a similar ban in Ireland led to a 25% decrease in smoking rates.

The Scottish government hopes that the new law will help to create a healthier environment for patients, visitors, and staff at healthcare facilities. The government also hopes that the law will encourage smokers to quit.
